Forever experimenting

Past & Present - Cringe!

Remember what it was like when you started? What work have you done that makes you cringe now?

I made manips for my favourite ships back in the day. If you don’t know what that means, it’s okay. (Shout out to the livejournal and tumblr folk). Finding the perfect screen caps and matching lyrics is precision science! It helped that I was part of a group of like-minded, supportive and most importantly anonymous peers. Now they’re permanently hidden in a folder of a folder, never to be seen by light of day.

It was how I discovered the wonders of Photoshop, which led me to Illustrator and then to majoring in Art & Creative Tech in uni which then got me my first creative agency job that I held for almost five years.

So yeah, it’s not the most gripping start to a journey, but it was mine. I wish I can give a more poignant answer when people ask me how I got started, but sometimes the truth ain’t pretty lol.

Do you have any advice for freelancers or those starting out in your creative field?

Take part in a community, whatever it is you’re into. I find people are more receptive when they have something in common. Going back to the cringey start in my journey, it was the people I was sharing my work with that kept pushing me and inspiring me to do better. It can be as simple as seeing someone else’s work and wanting to learn how they did it – whether you just straight up ask them or you try exploring in your own way – which might lead you to new skills that you can add to your arsenal.
